By Gregg Keizer, courtesy of Computer World

June 26, 2008 (Computerworld) Nearly 80% of businesses have Macs in-house, nearly double the percentage that said they had users running Mac OS X two years ago, a research firm said today.

“Then, we were talking about onesies and twosies,” said Laura DiDio, a research fellow at Yankee Group Research Inc. who conducted a survey of more than 700 senior IT administrators and C-level executives. “Now the number of actual users …

Choose Your GPS Carefully

Mac users planning to purchase a GPS should consider Macintosh compaitiblity as well as features when making their choice. Most current GPS models are designed so that their firmware or maps can be updated by connecting the GPS to a computer. With some, you can back up the entire contents of the GPS unit to the computer…which allows you to restore any custom settings you’ve entered in case the GPS has to be reset to factory defaults.

Magellan, one of the two most popular GPS manufacturers, doesn’t support Macs. That’s confirmed both on their web site, ...........see full article ...................

Mac share of surfers doubles in 8 months

By Gregg Keizer, Computerworld

The portion of people surfing the Web using a Mac has doubled in the past eight months, an Internet metrics analyst said Tuesday, and represents an audience that can’t be ignored by Web application developers.

“The amazing story since last summer has been how well the Mac is doing,” said Geoff Johnston, an analyst at WebSideStory in San Diego. “For the longest time, Mac hung around 3 percent of the operating systems using the Web. But it picked up around last summer, and has nearly doubled its market share.”

Measurements from WebSideStory and …

Faster MacBooks!

Apple has refreshed its MacBook laptop line with faster processors, bigger hard drives, and a doubling of the base model’s RAM. The three stock options are now:

2.0GHz (was 1.83GHz), 1GB RAM (was 512GB), 80GB hard disk, Combo drive ($1099)

2.16GHz (was 2.0GHz), 1GB RAM, 120GB hard disk, SuperDrive ($1299)

2.16GHz (was 2.0GHz), 1GB RAM, 160GB hard disk, SuperDrive, black ($1499)

Also, 802.11n wireless networking is now apparently built in (rather than requiring the “enabler”).

We don’t recommend the base model because it includes a Combo Drive, which reads and writes CDs, but …

Buying a New Mac? Our Current Recommendations

This is an awkward moment for Mac buyers. For years, all Macs have been built around IBM’s PowerPC microprocessor chips. Unfortunately, because IBM hasn’t been able to improve the speed of their chips quickly enough, or provide Apple sufficient quantites of their fastest PowerPC chips to satisfy the demand for Macs, Apple has chosen to base future Mac models on Intel chips.

Using a different brand of microprocessor won’t affect the way MacOS X looks or works, but under the hood PowerPC and Intel microprocessors talk entirely different native languages.

So far, Apple has moved two of …

RoadRunner High Speed Now Offers Mac Compatible Dial-up Access

It’s a mobile world. You may love the high speed DSL or cable internet you use in the office or at home, but what happens when you’re traveling? If the place you’re staying doesn’t offer high speed connections to the internet and you must access your mail and accounts, the only alternative is to connect via the older style dialup modem that’s built into all recent Mac models.

Until recently, most high speed internet providers provided exactly that…the high speed connection. If you wanted to connect via dialup, you needed to maintain a separate dialup account with another provider. We’ve …
